Functional
Capacity Evaluation
A Functional Capacity Evaluation is a systematic method of measuring
a patient’s physical ability and limitations to perform essential
functions of a job on a safe and dependable basis.
The patient will be given a thorough evaluation noting all subjective
complaints presented by the patient. An assessment of the patients
posture, gait, strength, range of motion and neurological status
will be given. The patient will also be given an aerobic assessment,
isometric consistency test, material handling test and non-material
handling test.
The injured patient’s capacity is compared to the job’s
demands in order to diminish the risk of re-injury and to evaluate
if the patient can properly perform essential job functions and activities
of daily living at a pre-injury level. This evaluation is also used
by physicians to determine the level, if any, of disability the patient
has.
